WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WATERPROOF & WATER-REPELLENT?

If you’re gearing up to take on wild, unpredictable wet weather, understanding the difference between water-resistant, water-repellent and waterproof is key. Find the right pair of shoes, activewear or sportswear for the job:​​​​​

  • Water-resistant: The lowest level of water protection, these products are able to resist water intrusion, however, there is a high likelihood that water will eventually penetrate the fabric. These types of garments are good for very light showers, and foggy, cold mornings. 
  • Water-repellent: The mid-tier of waterproofness, water-repellent products are able to repel water from seeping through the material. These products have a proper hydrophobic coating and can be used in most light to moderate wet weather conditions such as rain, snow and hail.
  • Waterproof: The highest form of water protection, waterproof products are able to be fully submerged in water for a period of time without being damaged. These products are reserved for the utmost extreme weather conditions where it’s almost guaranteed that your garment is going to be completely soaked or submerged during use.

For our UA STORM collection, we utilise water-repellent technology to provide much-needed protection from water, while keeping our footwear and activewear lightweight and flexible.

HOW TO WASH/CLEAN A WATER-REPELLENT JACKET?

While you’re out and about running through unpredictable weather, you may find that your UA STORM jacket becomes weathered or dirty thanks to endless wind and rain. To clean our UA STORM water-repellent jackets, you must:

  1. Keep the jacket zipped up.
  2. Turn the garment inside out.
  3. Machine wash on a cold cycle with similar colours or on its own.
  4. Tumble dry on a low heat or air dry.

Cleaning methods NOT recommended for our UA STORM jackets include:

  1. DO NOT bleach.
  2. DO NOT iron.
  3. DO NOT use softeners when washing.
